Euchre Card Game

Euchre is a popular trick-taking card game in the US that is gaining fans worldwide since it was introduced to the World Wide Web. Although its origins are unclear, it was likely brought into the country following the waves of immigrants in the 19th century, which could explain its similarity to several European card games.

The game boasts an impressive number of variations and special rules depending on who is playing and where. The online version of Euchre you find here on Reludi is a straightforward one to make the game as easy to learn and play as possible.

How to play Euchre

Euchre is a trick-taking game. The highest-value card from the leading suit takes the trick, safe from when trump is played. In this case, the highest-value trump card takes it.

The game is played by 4 players, divided into two teams of 2. The teams will take the role of defenders or markers depending on which one chooses the trump suit for the round. The role does not affect the gameplay. It will only influence the score at the end of the round.

Once each player has 5 cards, the dealer will turn the top card of the leftover deck. The player on the dealer’s left can decide to make that card the trump suit or not. If rejected, the same question is posed to the player immediately to their left.

If a player takes the suit, the dealer discards a card and takes the one on the table. If everyone rejects the suit, the player to the left of the dealer can pick one of the remaining three suits to be trump. The player/team that picks trump becomes the markers and the other becomes the defenders.

Before the game starts, the player who picked the trump suit can further decide to play alone (the teammate will stay out in the round) or play in a team. The decision can impact on the final score.

How to win: scoring

The first team to reach 10 points wins the game. However, the number of points collected in each round depends on the number of tricks taken and the role of the team. The value of the cards is irrelevant to the score.

Euchre scores for markers:

  • 3 to 4 tricks = 1 point
  • 5 tricks = 2 points
  •  3 to 4 tricks (solo) = 1 point
  •  5 tricks (solo) = 4 points

Euchre scores for defenders:

  • 3 to 5 tricks = 1 point

Winning tricks: the value of trumps

In Euchre, the highest-value card is the Jack of trump, followed by the Jack of the opposite suit with the same color. For example, if Hearts is trump, then the strongest card is the Jack of Hearts followed by the Jack of Diamonds.

The remaining trump cards follow the traditional ranking: Ace, King, Queen, 10, 9, etc.
